Compline

St. Matthew's offers a unique multicultural and intergenerational Compline service every Sunday evening from 7 to 7:30 p.m.

The service is based on the ancient, contemplative prayer service of evening Compline from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer. However, it also incorporates several elements from Native American and other traditions. The service opens with a call to worship sounded on a conch shell trumpet, as practiced by the earliest people in Minnesota.  It then proceeds with prayers, music, a story, silence, and thanksgiving, and ends with a gentle lullaby. Prayers and readings are drawn from the Maori-Angligan New Zealand Prayer Book, the Episcopal Dakota Indians' Tiospaye Wakan liturgy and other writings.  Maori flutes, Native American flutes and drums, or Scottish smallpipes are played to reflect the materials from these cultures.

After the service, you may experience silence in the sanctuary or come downstairs to the Undercroft Gallery for coffee, cocoa, cookies, and conversation.  Families and children are welcome!  If they wish, children attending will be involved in the service, (No child care is available). Suggestions for improvements, material to be included, and especially young musicians from our congregation who might wish to be involved occasionally are welcome!

The service is led by Native American storyteller and liturgical scholar Duke Addicks. For more information about the service, you may contact Duke at 651-643-0622 or dukeaddicks@earthlink.net
